Bee Stings
What causes my allergy to bee stings?
An allergic reaction occurs when the immune system overreacts to an allergen. In insect allergy, the allergen is venom from a sting or bite. Most serious reactions are caused by: Yellowjackets, honey bees, paper wasps, hornets and fire ants.
How do we evaluate your venom allergy?
If you think you might be allergic to stinging insects, an accurate diagnosis is essential. Our allergist / immunologist has specialized training and skills in determining the cause of your symptoms. We conduct a thorough health history followed by allergy testing to determine what, if any, allergens put you at risk for serious reactions to stinging insects.
In most cases, allergy skin testing is the preferred method of testing for venom allergies. It’s accurate and quick, showing exactly how your body reacts to venom, with same day results. We perform skin testing in the comfort of our cozy exam rooms. Venom skin tests are applied by intradermal injection just under the skin of your arms. In some cases due to inability to stop certain medications or an active skin disease, performing allergy tests on the skin is not possible. In those cases, blood testing for venom allergies is available.
Auni Allergy Treatment Experiences
Venom Immunotherapy
Traditional subcutaneous allergy shots for venom, also known as venom immunotherapy (VIT), are used to treat bee sting or venom allergies by injecting small amounts of the venom under the skin of the arm. Starting with a small amount and gradually increasing the amount with each weekly injection, your body builds a natural immunity. As your body gets used to the venom, there is a decrease in your body’s reaction to stings, and the risk of severe allergic reaction to stings decreases. Some people are able to discontinue allergy shots after about 3-5 years. Others remain on quarterly venom immunotherapy long-term. Auni Allergy offers rapid build-up options to get you desensitized to venom quickly.
An accurate diagnosis can clarify the difference between a normal toxic reaction to venom and a life-threatening allergic reaction. At Auni Allergy we help manage your venom allergy, so you can live allergy-free.
