Pollen, Indoor, and Pet Allergies
What causes my allergies?
More than a quarter of adults and children have at least one allergy. If you have seasonal allergies, you might be allergic to a specific tree, grass, or weed pollen, or mold that only sets off your symptoms at a certain time of year.
Two-thirds of people who suffer from seasonal allergies also have symptoms year-round. Those can be caused by indoor allergens, like dust mites, cockroaches, animal dander from pets, and mold. Pet allergy symptoms appear during or shortly after exposure to the animal. These symptoms may linger long after the animal is gone. This is because the dander remains in the air, on furniture, or on your clothing.
How do we evaluate your allergies?
It’s important to know your triggers. Our allergists are specially trained to help you identify the source of your suffering and then stop it — not just treat the symptoms. You or your doctor may suspect you have an allergy, but allergy testing performed by an allergist / immunologist is the best method to diagnose exactly what you are allergic to and to develop a personalized plan to manage your symptoms.
In most cases, allergy skin testing is the preferred method of testing for allergies. It’s accurate and quick, showing exactly how your body reacts to the allergen, with same day results. We perform skin testing in the comfort of our cozy exam rooms. Tests are applied to the skin of your arms, using state-of-the art testing devices to ensure the most accurate results. We start with a scratch test, and if inconclusive may try intradermal testing. In some cases due to inability to stop certain medications or an active skin disease, performing allergy tests on the skin is not possible. In those cases, blood testing for allergies is available.
Auni Allergy Treatment Experiences
Intralymphatic Immunotherapy (ILIT™)
Intralymphatic immunotherapy (ILIT™) is a ground-breaking method of administering allergens directly to a lymph node. The injection procedure is performed in a comfortable outpatient setting under ultrasound guidance. Treatment is complete in 8 weeks.
Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT)
Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) is an active treatment for aeroallergens that is done at home or on-the-go. SLIT involves placing allergen drops under the tongue every day. Updoses are administered in our office. The remainder of the treatment experience is done in the comfort of your home. Symptom improvement is gradual over the course of your treatment, generally 3-5 years.
Subcutaneous Immunotherapy (SCIT)
Traditional subcutaneous allergy shots (SCIT) are used to treat allergies by injecting small amounts of the allergens under the skin of the arm once a week. Starting with a small amount of the allergen and gradually increasing the amount with each weekly injection, your body gets used to the allergen over 3-5 years.
